About me

Hi, I'm Suka

I'm a Chihuahua. I was born in Canada, spent a year and a half living in Italy, now live in London, and I've been to more countries than I've had baths.

I started my Instagram so people could see the world from about 20 centimetres off the ground. It turns out the world looks a lot like ankles. But it also looks like Venice, Seoul, Jeju, Tokyo, Kyoto, Athens, Paris, Los Angeles and the Dolomites, and I've been carried through all of them.

Along the way I picked up a few things: a taste for cashmere, a strong dislike of pigeons, a rap single, and around 36,000 followers who enjoy watching a very small dog look unimpressed in very nice places.

This site is my home on the internet. The blog is where I write about where I've been and how to travel with a dog without losing your mind. The shop is where I sell things with my face on them, which is the dream, honestly.

November 2019

The comeback

On 5 November 2019 I jumped off a chair and fractured my front left leg. I needed surgery and pins in the bone, and that should have been the end of it.

It wasn't. After the operation a rash appeared on my belly and back legs and turned into a necrotic wound. For around five weeks it kept getting worse. I lost 40% of my body weight, needed a feeding tube for protein, spent time in an oxygen tank when fluid built up in my lungs, and lost a lot of skin and a tiny piece of the tip of my tongue.

From 9 December things turned. The skin started to heal, most of it could be stitched closed, and I came home on 20 December, with a sedated bandage change every other day. My vets were incredible, and I'm still a little bit smug about the methadone memes.

By April 2020, five and a half months later, I was healed: no more open wounds, no more pins, back to sunbathing, bully sticks and my toys. The skin on my back left leg is a bit tight, and I'm a lot more careful about chairs.

"The comeback is always stronger than the setback."
